Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) were dispatched to a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2021.
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and St. Petersburg Police were dispatched to the crash in the southbound lanes of I-275 at Exit 23A in St. Petersburg. The vehicle was located below the overpass that connects I-275 to I-375. The vehicle went over the side of the overpass that is approximately 40 feet above the parking lot for the St. Petersburg Water Resources facility.
Trooper say that he vehicle, traveling at a high speed on a wet roadway, was traveling southbound on the I-275 exit ramp leading to I-375. The 36 year-old male driver from St. Petersburg, lost control of the vehicle which rotated to the shoulder and collided with the concrete barrier wall.
Upon impact with the wall, the vehicle overturned, traveled over the wall and fell into the lot below. It impacted four unoccupied St. Petersburg utility vehicles.
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
