Man Arrested After Hit-and-Run Crash Killed Pedestrian in Tampa

Tampa Police Department continues to investigate a traffic fatality on E Columbus Drive at the intersection of 53rd Street N.  The crash that killed a pedestrian occurred at about 5:40 AM, Monday, February 20, 2017.

Tampa Police report that at approximately 5:40 AM, a pedestrian on E Columbus Drive was struck by a dump truck. The truck left the scene.

The pedestrian has been identified as 39 year-old Stephen J. Waters.

The truck left the scene.  With the help of an eyewitness, a description of the vehicle was shared with law enforcement, and a short time later a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over a truck matching the description.

The truck stopped, but while the Deputy was making contact with the driver of the truck he left the scene. The truck driver has been identified as 46 year-old David Yribar-Hernandez.

The truck stopped a short time later near N 50th Street and I-4 and the driver was detained.

Tampa Police detectives were able to determine that it was the truck that was involved in the fatal collision.

David Yribar-Hernandez has been arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Death, and Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.

The investigation continues.
