At approximately 10:05 a.m., a blue BMW traveling southbound on 34th Street went through a red light at Central Avenue. Two SUVs, a black Mercedes and a black Nissan Rouge, heading eastbound on Central Avenue had the green light.
Both SUVs struck the passenger side of the blue BMW.
The impact caused the Mercedes SUV to roll over and ended up on top of the blue BMW as both vehicles veered off the street and hit a 49-year-old man standing at the southeast corner of the intersection. The pedestrian was pinned under the wreckage and had to be freed by firefighters and paramedics.
The Nissan Rouge SUV involved came to a controlled stop on Central Avenue.
The pedestrian and the three vehicle drivers were all transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment of injuries. The pedestrian remains in the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The name of the pedestrian is not being released, pending notification of next-of-kin.
The intersection of Central Avenue and 34th Street was closed for more than three hours due to the traffic crash investigation. All lanes were reopened by 2 p.m.
The investigation is still ongoing.
