Pinellas Park man dead after exiting a moving vehicle and struck by numerous vehicles on the Howard Frankland bridge

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) continue to investigate after a man was killed in a traffic incident in the southbound lanes of the Howard Frankland bridge. The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2022.

Toshia Caldwell, age 38 of Port Richey, was traveling southbound in a 2017 Hyundai Elantra on I-275 in the inside center lane. Troopers say the passenger, a 25 year-old male from Pinellas Park, exited the Elantra at highway speed for unknown reason and fell upon the roadway. He was subsequently struck by an undetermined number of passing vehicles.

None of the vehicles that struck the passenger stopped following impact. The passenger suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.

Caldwell was later arrested by FHP Troopers for DUI and transorted to the Hillsborough County Jail. Her reported blood alcohol concentration at the time of the test was .077.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the FHP by calling 813-558-1800.
