Manatee County — Florida Highway Patrol State Troopers responded to reports of a reckless driver traveling southbound on Interstate 275 near the Sunshine Skyway South rest area on April 8, 2026, at approximately 8:25 a.m.
According to investigators, a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was observed driving recklessly when it sideswiped a white Dodge Ram pickup truck. Following the collision, both vehicles came to a stop, and both drivers exited.
During the confrontation, the driver of the Dodge Ram allegedly pointed a firearm at the Silverado driver and ordered him to get on the ground.
Troopers arrested 55-year-old Paul Shannon, the driver of the Dodge Ram, charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Manatee County Jail.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, 50-year-old Gary Thompson, was also arrested and charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a urine test. He was booked into the Manatee County Jail.
Authorities stated that a bystander’s video captured portions of the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
