The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office investigation of an aggravated assault and shooting on May 1, 2023, resulted in an arrest by the Fugitive Apprehension Unit (FAU)/U.S. Marshals Task Force this morning.
Monday, the sheriff’s office received a report of a vehicle being chased by a male subject armed with a handgun. The vehicle, occupied by a female and her child, fled from a residence as the male subject approached them on foot. The suspect fired three shots at the vehicle as it left the area. The driver identified the suspect as Jonte D. Curry-Chapman. According to the victim, she recognized the suspect and reported he had been known to carry a handgun. The victim was unsure of where Curry-Chapman was currently living.
Investigators corroborated the incident and determined, through video surveillance footage, that the suspect was seen running toward the victim’s vehicle as the vehicle left the driveway. Multiple gunshots can be heard as the car drives away. One bullet was later recovered inside the victim’s rear passenger door.
Curry-Chapman was located and arrested in Arcadia/ Desoto County Sheriff’s Office by the FAU/U.S. Marshals Task Force and charged with two counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder and one count of Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle.
