Shooting During Alleged Robbery Leaves One Man Dead, Another Critical in St. Petersburg

The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on Friday, January 23, shortly after 6:30 p.m., in the 900 block of 22nd Lane South.

According to preliminary information released by the St. Petersburg Police Department, 29-year-old Syltico Morand and another man were armed and attempted to rob two men who were seated inside a parked vehicle on 22nd Lane South. The two men inside the vehicle were also armed.

A confrontation occurred, during which Morand and the man with him were shot. Morand was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second man, age 30, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.

Officers arrived quickly, detained two men, and located multiple firearms at the scene.

At this time, investigators state that all available evidence indicates the shooting was in self-defense.

Additional investigative follow-up is ongoing. The men who were detained and interviewed have not been charged at this time.
