Sobriety checkpoint to be held Friday evening in Clearwater
June 24, 2014
Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office along with Officers from Clearwater and Tarpon Springs Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday evening. The checkpoint will be held at 540 South Hercules Ave on the campus of Clearwater High School. It will begin at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014 and run until 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014.
Along with impaired drivers, deputies will be looking for driver license, registration, insurance, and equipment violations. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Mobile Command Bus will be used for breath testing and the processing of arrested individuals.
This Friday’s checkpoint is dedicated to Robert Lemon, 25, and Hilary Michalak, 27. They died as the result of an alcohol-related traffic crash on The Memorial Causeway in Clearwater on September 2, 2013. The two were riding a tandem bicycle in the early morning hours of Labor Day when they were struck by a truck which then left the scene. The driver of the truck, Christopher Weed, was later arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
In video evidence taken from the hotel where he worked, he is seen consuming alcohol just hours before the fatal accident.
In May 2014, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison after he pled guilty for leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
