TAMPA — Tampa Fire Rescue responded to reports of a vehicle fire on the second floor of the parking garage at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, located at 2900 Bayport Dr. at 12:50 pm on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Upon arrival, crews encountered a heavy column of black smoke and upgraded the response to a second alarm.
Firefighters found multiple vehicles involved in a fire on the second floor inside the garage.
Due to deteriorating smoke conditions and safety concerns, crews were temporarily withdrawn from the structure and transitioned to a defensive fire attack. Fire suppression efforts continued using standpipe operations and truck companies.

The fire was under control within 60 minutes and contained to the floor of origin. The fire did not require a hotel evacuation and did not extend to the hotel structure.
Preliminary reports indicate approximately 10 vehicles sustained significant damage. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians. Traffic in the area was rerouted during the incident.
On Tuesday afternoon, Tampa Fire Rescue stated that the cause of the fire was identified as a 2015 Dodge Caravan, which had undergone prior engine repair work, that caught fire within the garage. The van was the initial point of origin and extended to nine adjacent vehicles.
Structural engineers are working to determine the extent of the damage sustained to the parking garage.
