4-year-old struck and critically injured in Clearwater crash

First Responders from the Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue responded to a call this morning at the Opal Sands at 430 South Gulfview Boulevard on Clearwater Beach.

At approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday, February, 25, 2024, a 4-year-old boy was struck by a 2024 Ford Expedition and sustained potentially life-threatening injuries.

He was flown to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg by a medical helicopter with critical injuries.

The Ford Expedition was driven by a valet driver at the Opal Sands at the time of the crash.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

On Tuesday morning, Clearwater Police identified the injured child as Toby Swanson of Fargo, N.D. He remains in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

The victim’s father is Erik Swanson, a relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. The team holds its Spring Training at TD Ballpark located in Dunedin, Florida.

Traffic homicide investigators are on the scene. No further information is available at this time.
