Tractor-Trailer Overturns and Catches Fire on I-275 Exit Ramp

A tractor-trailer overturned and caught fire Tuesday morning, September 9, 2025, on the exit ramp from northbound I-275 to SR-690.

According to investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m. when the westbound tractor-trailer failed to negotiate a curve on the ramp. The vehicle overturned and ignited after a fuel leak.

The adult male driver, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Tampa General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews responded to extinguish the flames and continue working to clear the ramp. Motorists are advised to avoid the area until the scene is fully reopened.

Awning Works Inc is proud to recognize the incredible bravery of employee Chase Thalheimer who acted without hesitation to save a driver trapped in a burning semi-truck that rolled over onto it’s side, on the morning of September 9, 2025.

While on his way back to our facility, he witnessed the accident and immediately rushed to the scene. Despite heavy smoke and growing flames, he could hear the driver screaming that he was on fire. The driver sustained serious burns but Chase was able to climb on top of the vehicle and pull him out to safety, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life. 

 “ Chase has been with our company for 8 years and we will be honoring his extraordinary act of selflessness. The courage and quick action shown by Chase is nothing short of heroic,” said Jeremy Schechner, CEO. “We are thankful that Chase is safe and we are deeply proud to have someone of such character on our team.”

Northbound I-275 ramp to Toll SR 690, Toll 686A, and 118th Avenue is closed 
for emergency repairs 

St. Petersburg – Due to a truck crash earlier today that damaged pavement, the 
northbound I-275 Exit 30 ramp to Toll SR 690 and 118th Avenue N is closed for 
roadway repairs. The ramp is expected to open by sometime early Wednesday 
morning, weather permitting. The northbound I-275 Exit 30 lanes to both 
eastbound and westbound SR 686 (Roosevelt Boulevard) will remain open. 

DETOUR: Drivers can exit onto westbound SR 686 (Roosevelt Boulevard), then 
turn left and go south on 28th Street N to 118th Avenue N. However, no access 
to Toll SR 690 and Toll 686A is available except from southbound I-275 while 
the northbound I-275 ramp is closed.
