Two Dead in Overnight Fiery Vehicle Crash of Stolen Vehicle on 38th Avenue N In St. Petersburg
Two people were killed in a crash that occurred shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018.
The crash occurred on 38th Avenue North at 49th Street when a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
This crash is still under investigation, but preliminary information indicates that a white 2016 Mazda Miata was westbound at a high rate of speed on 38th Ave North.
As it was approaching 49th Street North, the driver lost control, swerved off the road and hit a tree. The car immediately caught fire.
When police arrived the driver and passenger were burned beyond recognition.
Police determined the car was stolen hours earlier.
Identification of the two bodies is pending the medical examiner’s report.
St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) had 38th Avenue North closed between 49th and 50th Street during the investigation. The roadway was reopened shortly before 10 a.m.
