On Saturday, July 8, 2023, at approximately 9:00 a.m., two individuals, a 40-year-old female, and a 9-year-old female, sustained injuries when lightning struck in the vicinity during a weather delay at the USF Track & Field Stadium at 4202 E Fowler Ave in Tampa.
The lightning bolt hit a pole nearby and did not directly strike the patients. Tampa Fire Rescue transported them to the hospital in stable condition.
Lightning strikes can be highly unpredictable and pose a significant risk to individuals in outdoor settings. It is crucial to prioritize safety during thunderstorms to minimize the chances of getting struck by lightning. When thunder is heard, or lightning is observed, seeking shelter immediately in a substantial, fully enclosed building or a vehicle with a metal roof is essential.
Avoid seeking shelter under trees, open structures, or metal objects, as they can attract lightning. If shelter is unavailable, crouching down low, keeping a low profile, and minimizing contact with the ground is advised. Remember, it is safe to resume outdoor activities only after at least 30 minutes since the last observed thunder or lightning.
