Woman Facing Second Degree Attempted Murder Charges After Shooting in Largo

A Largo woman was arrested following a shooting that occurred at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 511 11th Street NW in Largo, Florida.

Officers from the Largo Police Department responded to the scene after receiving reports of a person shot.  The suspect in the shooting was identified as 52 year-old Theresa Simmons who resided at shooting location.

An officer from the Belleair Police department located Simmons in a taxi cab in the area of Belleair Forest Drive and 8th Avenue NW.  Police recovered an unzipped purse containing a .22 caliber revolver with the serial number altered making it unidentifiable.

The victim, Douglas Reents, reportedly walked toward Simmons’ bedroom to request the $10 that she reportedly owned him for a ride he provided.  According to the arrest affidavit, Simmons opened the bedroom door holding a handgun. The victim reportedly began to walk away when multiple witnesses say she shot him in the middle portion of his back.  He is now suffering with paralysis from the waist down as a result of the gunshot wound.

Simmons has prior felony convictions: Grand theft in December 2009, Possession of methadone with intent to sell in February 2011, and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription in March of 2016.

Simmons was transported to the Pinellas County Jail where she is currently residing.

She is now facing charges of

  • Second Degree Attempted Murder
  • Carrying a Concealed Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm with Serial Number Altered
  • Felon in Possession of Firearm
