Young child transported by air to Tampa General after being burned at the KOA Campground
At about 10:37 am this morning, emergency crews were dispatched to the KOA campground for a report of a child that was burned in a pit of heated coals. Upon arrival, paramedics on-scene decided to air transport the two year-old to Tampa General Hospital due to their Regional Burn Center. Units from both Seminole Fire Rescue and Madeira Beach Fire Department assisted with patient care and setting up an landing zone for the helicopter. They were assisted by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Sunstar Paramedics.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the child, who was celebrating his 2nd birthday, lost his balance while riding a scooter in a patio area near the fire pit. Due to losing his balance he fell into the pit containing heated coals.
He is in stable condition in the intensive care unit of the hospital with first and second degree burns to his back, left arm and left leg.
The KOA Campground is located in Unincorporated Pinellas at 5400 95th Street North. Its location is very close to the Bay Pines bridge across from the War Veterans’ Memorial Park.
