Death in elevator accident under investigation by Pinellas Sheriff’s Office

Death in elevator accident under investigation by Pinellas Sheriff’s Office

Units from Pinellas County and Fire Rescue were dispatched at approximately 11 am this morning to the Tradewinds Jacaranda Beach Villas at 5500 Gulf Blvd in St. Peterburg Beach.

Mark Allen Johnson, age 45, was fatally injured when the elevator fell on top of him.  Mr. Johnson of 16219 Sawgrass Circle, Tampa was working with a fellow employee of SWS Environmental Services.   While cleaning oil from the elevator shaft, the elevator fell on Mr. Johnson.  His co-worker was not injured.  Hotel Maintenance reportedly locked the elevator prior to the men beginning the work and they had been working in the elevator shaft for about 40 minutes prior to the accident.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will continue their investigation but it appears to be an accidental death at this time.
