Largo Police Receive Grant to Reduce Pedestrian Deaths

Largo Police Department receives funding from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in Largo.

Crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclist are more likely to result in fatalities or serious injuries than any other type of crashes.  The emotional suffering and financial impacts caused by these crashes are significant.  As a result, the Largo Police Department has entered into an agreement for funding from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to begin High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) aimed at improving pedestrian and bicycle safety in Largo.  (The HVE program is not new to this area or the State of Florida.)

The HVE program provides overtime funding to permit agencies to conduct on-street enforcement operations that promote pedestrian and bicycle safety.  In addition to enforcement activities, officers will be providing safety tip cards and educational materials during on-street encounters.  The program will run from December 01, 2014 through June of 2015.

The goal of this program is to educate pedestrians, bicyclist, and motorist of the laws that pertain to them and reduce the number of injury and fatal accidents through HVE efforts.  More information on the HVE program can be found by visiting: www.AlertTodayFlorida.com.
