ST. PETERSBURG — A 15-year-old Gibbs High School student was arrested Thursday after authorities say he brought a concealed firearm onto the school campus.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the ninth-grade student was charged with possession of a weapon on school property and unlawful carrying of a concealed firearm. Both charges are felonies.
Police said a staff member notified the school resource officer after becoming aware that a student might be concealing a handgun in his clothing.
An investigation was immediately launched, resulting in the arrest of the 15-year-old boy.
Police said the student did not make any threats against anyone or against the school.
The St. Petersburg Police Department emphasized that student safety remains a top priority and that any weapon found on campus or other potential threat to school safety will be thoroughly investigated.
Police also reminded students that bringing a weapon onto school property is taken seriously and can result in severe consequences.
