A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle on Ulmerton Road at 121st Street at approximately 8:16 PM on December, 22, 2014.
Crews from Largo Fire Rescue, Seminole Fire Rescue, Sunstar and Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene to assist. Â Arriving units found the pedestrian down in the roadway. He was declared a trauma alert and was originally being transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. Â Due to this deteriorating condition, Sunstar diverted to the closest hospital at the time which was Northside Hospital where he expired from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 44 year-old driver from Largo was traveling westbound in the center lane of Ulmerton Road approaching the intersection of 121st Street N in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. Â The 18 year-old pedestrian, Juantavis Wesley, was crossing Ulmerton Road traveling south at 121st Street N. Â The traffic control signal at this intersection was flashing yellow for Ulmerton Rd and flashing red for 121st Street N traffic. Â These flashing lights assist crews from Largo Fire Rescue Station 39 to enter onto Ulmerton Road as their station is nearby.
Wesley ran across Ulmerton Road in an attempt to cross the roadway before the arrival of the oncoming traffic. Due to the low light conditions at this time, the driver of the vehicle was unable to observe Wesley and as a result the two collided.
Westbound lanes of Ulmerton Road remained closed at 121st Street during the investigation.
