Bicyclist Injured In Collision With Clearwater Police Vehicle

An Officer with the Clearwater Police Department radioed for assistance due to his involvement in a traffic incident Tuesday evening at about 10:46 PM. The incident occurred on Court Street at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
Additional units from Clearwater Police Department responded along with Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department, Sunstar Paramedics and Bayflite.
The 63-year-old male bicyclist was transported via Bayflite to Bayfront Health – St. Petersburg due to his injuries. The Officer was not injured in the collision.
Clearwater Police traffic homicide investigators arrived on scene and according to Rob Shaw, Public Information Officer for the Clearwater Police Department, the preliminary information indicates that the bicyclist was southbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, while the officer was eastbound on Court Street in an unmarked Chevrolet Tahoe.
In addition, preliminary information reveals that the officer had a green light, and the bicyclist had a red light and the do-not-cross pedestrian signal as well. The bicyclist rode his bicycle into the front left side of the Tahoe.
Court Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue were closed to traffic for a prolonged period of time during the investigation by the Clearwater Police Department homicide investigators.
Names of those involved are expected to be available later in the day on Wednesday.
