Motorcyclist Dead in Dunedin DUI Head-on Wrong-way Collision Saturday Night

On Saturday, January 30, 2016, a crash occurred at approximately 9:23 PM. It was the area of County Road 1 and Burnham Lane in Dunedin, Florida.
First responders arrived on scene to find 38 year-old John Sorensen of Clearwater seriously injured after being ejected from his 2005 Honda VT Motorcycle in a vehicle crash.
Bayflite was immediately requested to rapidly transport Sorensen to a local trauma center due to the extent of his injuries. According to Cristen Smith, Public Information Officer at the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Sorensen later died from his injuries at the hospital.
The crash is under investigation by the PCSO Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) According to investigators, 40 year-old Kenneth Cabral of Clearwater, the driver of a 2004 Dodge Durango, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of County Road 1 when he hit a motorcyclist head on.
According to investigators, Sorensen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Cabral reportedly suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
Throughout the investigation, Cabral showed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of DUI Manslaughter according to PCSO.
Cabral was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident. Records indicate that Cabral is being held on $20,000 bail.
IONTB has obtained arrest documentation that indicated that Cabral was transported to Mease Dunedin hospital. Blood taken at the hospital revealed that his blood alcohol concentration was .257. That is more than 3 times the max legal limit for impaired driving in the State of Florida.
