Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Detective Fired After Being Arrested for DUI at Homicide Scene

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Detective Fired After Being Arrested for DUI at Homicide Scene

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office detective, 48 year-old George D. Moffett Jr. was arrested and charged with one count of Driving Under the Influence. Moffett was hired by the agency on March 20, 2006. Moffett was a detective in the Robbery/Homicide Unit.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 10770 Gandy Boulevard in St. Petersburg.

PCSO deputies responded to a shooting at 10610 Gandy Boulevard in Unincorporated St. Petersburg.

The victim was pronounced deceased and patrol deputies requested homicide detectives respond to the scene.

48-year-old Detective George Moffett Jr., a member of the Homicide Unit, was off duty and responded to the scene from his home in Riverview, Florida.

Moffett responded in an unmarked PCSO vehicle.

Patrol deputies observed Moffett arrive at the scene operating his PCSO vehicle and upon exiting his car, deputies observed that Moffett appeared under the influence of alcohol. Moffett had bloodshot and glassy eyes, slurred speech, and a distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person.

Because Moffett appeared impaired by alcohol, deputies began a DUI investigation and Moffett admitted that he had consumed several alcoholic beverages (Crown Royal liquor) before responding to the homicide scene.

Moffett agreed to perform Field Sobriety Tests and he performed poorly on the tests.

Moffett submitted to a breath sample which indicated he had a BrAC of .129/.134, which is well over the legal limit of .08%.

Moffett was arrested and charged with one count of Driving Under the Influence. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

Moffett was previously convicted of DUI in October 1995, 11 years before he was employed by PCSO.

Consistent with PCSO policy regarding members arrested for DUI, Moffett’s employment was immediately terminated following his arrest.
