Chief Patrick Competelli receives a Golden Axe from the City of Belleair Bluffs
Former Fire Chief of Belleair Bluffs Fire Rescue, Patrick Competelli, receives a Golden Axe at a City Commission Meeting. The meeting was held this evening at 7 pm at Belleair Bluffs City Hall.
Chief Competelli served as the Fire Chief of Belleair Bluffs Fire Rescue from May 2008 through July 2009. He was ultimately terminated following a very controversial vote at the August 5, 2009 commission meeting.
The Chief was at odds with the mayor, Chris Arbutine, Sr., regarding the future of the Belleair Fire Department. A contract to provide fire rescue services to the City of Belleair Bluffs was ultimately awarded to Largo Fire Rescue.
Chris Arbutine, Sr., the presiding Mayor for the City of Belleair Bluffs, was the one that presented Chief Competelli with the Golden Axe. A Golden Axe is very rare and normally awarded to firefighters and chief officers for outstanding performance during their career.
This special presentation was given at the beginning of the commission meeting and Chief Competelli spoke for a few minutes after accepting the Golden Axe. “I want to thank Mayor Arbutine and the Commission for this recognition.”
This marks the end of a very tumultuous relationship between all parties. The City recently settled its legal case with Chief Competelli and both parties agree it’s time to move on.
The Chief is currently employed as a Firefighter/Paramedic and Fire Safety Inspector for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. Prior to his employment with Belleair Bluffs, he served in various capacities within the Pinellas County EMS system from 1987 until 2012. This included working for Sunstar Ambulance Service, Dunedin Fire Rescue and the Office of the Medical Director as the Director of Quality Management.
