Arrest made after motorcyclist killed in St. Petersburg hit-and-run crash

At 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023, a Honda motorcycle driven by 57-year-old Jonathan Hughes of St. Petersburg, FL, was traveling westbound on 22nd Avenue South in the curb lane approaching 45th Street South.

A white Jeep Grand Cherokee, operated by an unknown driver, was traveling eastbound on 22nd Avenue South, in the median lane, attempting to make a northbound turn onto 45th Street South.

The driver of the Jeep failed to yield the right of way and turned into the motorcycle’s path, causing the crash. The Jeep left the scene of the crash.

The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital and died from his injuries.

On Monday, May 15th, investigators were able to locate the jeep involved in a fatal motorcycle crash that killed Hughes.

On Tuesday, May 16th, at approximately 2 p.m., 20-year-old Jakil Powell of St. Petersburg turned himself in after walking into the Police Station and admitted being the driver of the Jeep and leaving the scene.

He was identified as the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and was arrested. He is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
