83-Year-Old Woman Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Dunedin Parking Lot Crash

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash at approximately 3:03 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the Publix located at 1491 Main Street in Dunedin.

According to investigators, 71-year-old Mary Canfield was driving a 2022, Volkswagen Tiguan through the parking lot when she stopped and put her vehicle in reverse to allow another vehicle to exit.

While backing up, Canfield struck 83-year-old Carol Spezzano, who was pushing a shopping cart through the crosswalk. The impact caused Spezzano to fall and hit her head on the pavement.

Spezzano was transported to a local trauma center with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities stated that speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
