Fire Weather Watch Issued Early Monday for Tampa Bay Area

A Fire Weather Watch was issued on April 20, 2026 at 2:30 a.m. EDT for Pinellas County and much of west-central Florida, as conditions are expected to increase the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires.

The alert, issued by the National Weather Service, remains in effect through April 21 at 6:00 p.m.

Forecasters say a combination of low relative humidity, dry vegetation, and gusty winds could create critical fire weather conditions. These factors can allow fires to ignite easily and spread quickly across the region.

Counties included in the Fire Weather Watch include:

  • Pinellas
  • Hillsborough
  • Pasco
  • Hernando
  • Polk
  • Manatee
  • Sarasota
  • Highlands
  • Sumter
  • DeSoto

A Fire Weather Watch means that dangerous fire conditions are possible, though not yet certain. If conditions worsen, the watch could be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions, including avoiding outdoor burning, properly disposing of cigarettes, and preventing sparks from equipment or vehicles.

With dry conditions in place, even small ignition sources could lead to fast-moving brush fires.

Officials continue to monitor conditions and will provide updates as needed.
