A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal Memorial Day weekend shooting that left one man dead and another injured in downtown St. Petersburg.
On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, St. Petersburg Police investigators arrested 36-year-old Matthew Williams in connection with the May 25 shooting death of 29-year-old Peter-Austin Afentakis.
Williams faces charges of:
- Second-Degree Murder
- Attempted Second-Degree Murder
- Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon
- Violation of Probation
Earlier this week, detectives arrested 25-year-old Jacob Carreras and charged him with second-degree murder in Afentakis’ death.
According to investigators, shortly before 3 a.m. on May 25, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of 1st Avenue North near Beach Drive. When officers arrived, they found Afentakis suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Detectives say Carreras and Williams became involved in a verbal altercation with Afentakis outside a downtown establishment before the shooting occurred. Investigators allege both suspects fired shots at Afentakis during the confrontation.
A second victim suffered a minor injury during the incident.
The investigation remains active, and detectives have not released additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the altercation.
Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the St. Petersburg Police Department.
