Deputies investigating overnight fatality crash closing 62nd Avenue N involving three teens

The Major Accident Investigation Team from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatality crash in front of 1024 62nd Avenue N.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:35 a.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2022 as the vehicle, with three occupants, traveled eastbound on 62nd Avenue N.

One occupant died at the scene and two others were transported to local trauma centers. One of the two hospitalized suffered potentially life threatening injuries

Deputies along with the helicopter and K-9s were dispatched to reports of an auto burglary. Unrelated to the auto burglary, the helicopter spotted three subjects entering a 2016 Maserati off 62nd Avenue N and 28th Street North. The owner left vehicle unlocked with keys inside.

Patrol deputies on the ground attempted to stop the vehicle, however the driver, 15 year-old Keondrick Lang, accelerated rapidly leading deputies to slow down due the agency’s restrictive pursuit policy. The vehicle reached a speed of 123 miles per hour just seconds before the crash. Lang lost control of the vehicle in the area of 1024 62nd Avenue North, drove over a curb, hit the business sign and the vehicle flipped. Responding deputies immediately rendered aid to the suspects.

The two other occupants were 15 year-old Mario Bonilla and 16 year-old Malachi Daniels. Lang was transported to the trauma center at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with critical life threatening injuries. Bonila died at the scene. Daniels was transported to All Children’s Hospital with traumatic but non life threatening injuries. All three were extricated from the severely damaged vehicle by firefighters.

Lang has undergone multiple surgeries in attempts to stabilize this condition. If he survives, he is facing charges of grand theft and the possibility of 3rd degree felony murder.

Deputies located a black ski mask and a glove recovered at the scene and in the possession of the suspects.
