Double rollover hit and run crash closes I-275 for several hours Wednesday evening

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) continue to investigate a serious injury crash on I-275 in Hillsborough County.

The crash occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 on I-275 at Waters Avenue.

The three vehicles involved were only identified as a van, a sedan, and a tractor trailer. All three of the vehicles were traveling southbound on I-275, south of Waters Avenue, in the center, inside and outside lanes respectively.

The driver of the sedan failed to clear the inside lane prior to changing lanes; as a result, the left side of sedan collided with the right side of the tractor trailer which rotated across the travel lanes, overturned and caught fire.

Following the collision, the sedan then traveled across all lanes, struck a guardrail, rotated and overturned as well. Unable to stop, the van with 6 occupants collided with the undercarriage of the tractor trailer.
