Driver now charged with DUI manslaughter after rear-ending a vehicle on the Courtney Campbell Causeway

At 3:42 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, Tampa Police received calls advising that a traffic crash had occurred on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.  The callers stated that a vehicle had flipped over and multiple people had been ejected from the vehicle. Tampa Police and Clearwater Police responded immediately to provide medical attention to those involved.

One vehicle, a 2017 Nissan GT-R, operated by 33 year-old Joshua Roelof, rear-ended a 2005 Kia Sorrento with four people inside.

All four occupants of the Kia were ejected from the vehicle. Two 44 year-old men died at the scene of the crash. One 36 year-old man and a 33 year-old woman were transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Roelofs was arrested this weekend and now faces two counts of DUI Manslaughter and two counts of DUI Serious Bodily Injury.  Video from his dash camera captured the crash that closed the Courtney Campbell Causeway for hours during the morning commute.

Traffic homicide investigators say Roelofs was going at an estimated 100mph when he rear-ended the Kia.

None of the passengers in the Kia Sorrento were wearing seatbelts

Roelof was uninjured in the crash.
