Driver of Van Dead After Colliding With a Garbage Truck in Pasco County
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:57 a.m. on Monday, September 3, 2018 on Prospect Road east of Handcart Road.
The driver of a 2002 Ford Van, 65 year-old Derek McCormick of Tampa, was traveling southbound on Prospect Road approaching a curve.
A 2011 Mack garbage truck was traveling northbound on Prospect Road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, McCormick failed to negotiate the curve, entered the northbound lane and collided head on with the Progressive Waste garbage truck.
Following the initial impact, both vehicles traveled to the east, collided with a guardrail and caught fire.
McCormick suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. Both the driver of the garbage truck, 36 year-old Christopher Santos of Brooksville and passenger, 28 year-old Dustin Sanders of New Port Richey, suffered serious injuries. They were transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
The investigation continues.
