Driver Critically Injured After Slamming Into a Hillsborough County Fire Engine That Was Assisting at Previous Crash

At approximately 7:10 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to a single car auto accident on I-4 Westbound just East of Branch Forbes Rd.

Upon arrival, responders found a white Toyota Corolla whose driver appeared to  have spun out of control and struck the median divider, disabling her vehicle.

As HCFR Engine 26 pulled up and responders were exiting Engine 26 to assist the driver, their vehicle was struck from behind by a black 2016 Toyota Corolla,  causing the driver of the black Toyota Corolla to become entrapped.

The driver, a 26 year-old Orlando man, was extricated by crews and airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the white Corolla received minor injuries.  No injuries are reported to the crew of engine 26.

The cause of the accident is under investigation at this time.
