The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred in the northbound lanes of I-275 in Manatee County.
The crash occurred on Monday, January 20, 2020 at approximately 10:45 a.m. near milemarker 2.
Troopers say a dump truck was traveling north on I-275 in the right lane. The driver lost control and began to travel off the roadway to the right.
The driver, 49 year-old Reynaldo G Rodriguez of Tampa, attempted to correct this maneuver by steering to the left which led to the truck overturning onto the right grass shoulder of I-275.
Two St. Petersburg Police Officers got out of their patrol vehicles to assist. Both officers attempted to get the driver out and couldn’t due to the angle of entrapment.
The vehicle then caught on fire forcing the officers to retreat.
The driver of the dump truck was pronounced deceased on scene.
The investigation continues.
