FHP investigating serious injury crash on Gandy Bridge

A Brandon man was seriously injured in a crash on the Gandy Bridge at approximately 2:13 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1, 2020.

Jose Marte, age 37 of Brandon, was operating a 2006 Lexus GS300 traveling westbound in the west end of the Gandy Bridge. He attempted to overtake a 2004 Audi A5 and sideswiped it in the process. The Audi was driven by 48 year-old Angel Molina of St. Petersburg.

After the collision, the Lexus lost control which entered the center median and overturned several times before coming to final rest blocking both eastbound lanes of the bridge.

The Audi came to final rest in the median.

Marte was transported to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries. Troopers say he was not wearing a seatbelt and reportedly ejected from the vehicle.

Molina and his passenger both experienced minor injuries and were treated at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

The investigation continues and charges are listed as pending.
