Georgia Woman Dies In 5 Vehicle Crash On US-19 In Palm Harbor

Posted: May 2, 2015 – 1 AM

At approximately 4:48 PM on Friday, May 1, 2015, multiple fire rescue crews were dispatched to reports of a vehicle crash in Palm Harbor on US-19 near Colonial Blvd.

Arriving crews found multiple vehicles involved which were spread out over a very large area. Additional crews were dispatched to assist at the scene along with Bayflite, Sunstar Paramedics, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

According to FHP, five vehicles were involved in the crash that closed all northbound lanes of US-19 for hours.  Krystal D. Weatherhead, age 25 of Ellijay, Geogia was travelling southbound on US-19 in a 2009 Chevy Cobalt in the inside lane.  For an unknown reason, the right side of Weatherhead’s vehicle stuck the left side of a 2002 Dodge Pickup truck driven by 38 year-old Victor Cervera of New Port Richey, Florida.  The impact caused her vehicle to rotate, cross over the median, and into oncoming northbound traffic.  Once in oncoming traffic, she made impact with a tandem axle of a trailer being towed by 38 year-old Joes Negron of Wesley Chapel, Florida.  The force of the impact caused the tandem axle to dislodge from the trailer. The trailer became airborne and sailed over a 2012 Toyota being driven by 54 year-old Thomas Privey of Spring HIll, Florida.  The trailer came to rest on the top of a 2008 Hyundai which was being driven by Donna Bailey, age 60 of Clearwater, Florida.

Weatherhead was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital via Bayflite where she later died from her injuries.  Bailey was transported via Sunstar Paramedics to Bayonet Point with serious injuries.  No injuries were reported to the three other drivers involved in the crash.

The Semi is owned by Midwest Transport, Inc.  According to their website, Midwest Transport, Inc. hauls mail for the United States Postal Service. It is one of the larger U.S. Mail contractors in the United States.

FHP does not believe that the crash was alcohol related.
