Investigation underway following critical injury crash on 49th Street N in Pinellas Park

Officers from the Pinellas Park Police Department continue to investigate a crash that occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2020.

The three vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of 49th Street N and 94th Avenue in Pinellas Park.

Based on the preliminary investigation, 56 year-old Leonard Matthews of Pinellas Park was traveling north on 49th St and made a left turn attempting to go west on 94th Ave.

While making this turn in his 2000 Toyota Corolla, Matthews drove into the path of a 2003 Honda Accord driven by a 24 year-old Largo resident, causing a collision.

As a result of the crash, the Honda Accord was redirected and struck a 2016 Maserati Ghibli stopped on 94th Ave at the red light that was being driven a 24 year-old Pinellas Park man.

As a result of the collision, Leonard Matthews was transported to a Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he is currently receiving medical attention for life threatening injuries.  No injuries were sustained to either of the two other drivers.

At this time, investigators say that there are no criminal charges involved in this case, and the investigation is still active.

The crash limited southbound 49th Street to one lane and closed all of 94th Ave at the intersection for several hours.
