Largo Police continue to investigate to shooting that occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2019.
The initial call for service was a vehicle crash in the 11900 block of Indian Rocks Road.
Largo Police officers responded to the possible hit and crash but it is unclear at this time if a vehicle struck the victim pedestrian or the pedestrian fell in the roadway.
There are no injuries to the pedestrian that would indicate a crash. No witnesses who were at the scene saw contact between a vehicle and the pedestrian.
Once witnesses saw the pedestrian down in the road, they assumed he had been hit by a car.
While trying to render aid, bystanders urged the pedestrian to stay down and wait for medical assistance.
The pedestrian collected his belongings and began walking away from the scene. He was followed by Good Samaritans who continued to ask him to stay.
The pedestrian made it very clear he want to leave.
After being followed for a block and a half, the pedestrian became angry, produced a box cutter, and approached one of the Good Samaritans in a threatening manner.
The Good Samaritan fired one round from a handgun, striking the pedestrian in the leg. The Samaritan immediately rendered aid and applied a tourniquet to the pedestrian as paramedics arrived.
The pedestrian was transported to the trauma center at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he underwent surgery for the gunshot wound.
Detectives have not been able to interview him at this time because of his medical condition.
The Samaritan was detained and interviewed by detectives. He was subsequently released.
Detectives are investigating and charges may be pending for one or more of the parties.
