Man Injured in Crash Involving Pool Service Truck Crash in Largo
Posted: December 3, 2015
At approximately 11:30 AM on Thursday, December 3, 2015 units from Largo Fire Rescue, Largo Police and Sunstar Paramedics were dispatched to a traffic crash. The crash was located at 3690 East Bay Drive just west of Belcher Road.
Based on additional information received by the 9-1-1 Regional Communications Center, additional assets were dispatched including a unit from Pinellas Park Fire Rescue. Arriving units found a heavily damage pool service truck which resulted in a chlorine spill and significant injuries to the driver.
Crews working to remove the injured driver utilized their Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) due to the strong odor of chlorine in and around the Ford Ranger truck. A ventilation fan was utilized to circulate fresh air for the driver who was exposed to both the odor and direct contact to the chloride.
Bayflite was requested and arrived as the injured driver was being removed from the truck. Firefighters needed to decontaminate the man by rinsing away any chlorine that he was exposed to. The man was transported via Sunstar Paramedics a few blocks away and loaded into Bayflite. He was conscious at the scene but his condition is unknown at this time.
Hazardous material crews were dispatched to the scene to survey the extent of the spill and worked to cleanup the spill while minimizing any environmental impact.
Witnesses reports that the truck was traveling eastbound on East Bay Drive when it crossed the center median, across all westbound lanes of traffic, through the bushes until ultimately into a tree across the parking lot. The causes of this crash is under investigation by Largo Police Department but one witness reported the truck had experienced a tire blowout prior to the crash.
