Man on Scooter Being Towed by an SUV Killed in Crash Monday Evening in St. Petersburg

The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating a crash on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S. at Melrose Avenue which occurred at approximately 10 p.m.

A 2002 silver Mazda Minivan, driven by 74 year-old Thomas Alexander was traveling southbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South in the median lane.

A red 1999 GMC Yukon, driven by 17 year-old Delanard Matthews Jr.) was traveling northbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North in the center left turn lane, preparing to turn onto Melrose Avenue South.

Nathanial Vancleave, age 30, was seated on a 2011 Scooter being towed behind the GMC with a towing strap.  The scooter was nonoperational and had no lights on. 

The GMC made a left hand turn onto Melrose Avenue South safely, but the scooter was not able to clear the southbound lanes of travel in time and was struck by the Mazda.

The victim was thrown from the scooter. He was not wearing a helmet or any other protective equipment.  He was transported from the scene to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators say that citations are pending the completion of the investigation.
