Motorcyclist Critically Injured in St. Petersburg Crash

St. Petersburg Police are investigating a crash involving a motorcycle and a Mazda CX7 at the intersection of 15th Avenue S. and 49th Street.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018.

According to investigators, a 2008 Mazda CX-7, driven by 42 year-old Jessica L. Bays was southbound on 49th Street South, preparing to make a left turn onto 15th Avenue South.

27 year-old Matthew D. Chappell was operating a 2014 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on 49th Street South approaching 15th Avenue South.

Bays reportedly did not see the motorcycle coming, and turned left into Chappell’s path of travel.  The motorcycle struck the front passenger corner of the Mazda and Chappell was thrown from the motorcycle.

Police say Chappell was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment.  He was transported from the scene to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life threatening injuries.

As of Saturday morning, Chappell was still considered to be in critical condition, but stable.
