Pedestrian killed in St. Petersburg crash

Officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department are investigating a fatal traffic crash involving a pedestrian.

The crash occurred at about 10:17 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14th when a Volkswagon Passat was traveling westbound on 18th Avenue. S. approaching 19th Street S.

A pedestrian, identified as 54 year-old Jeffrey Francis Maurio of St. Petersburg, was crossing 18th Ave. S.  from the north side of the street.

Police say that there was heavy rain at the time and the Passat struck the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with officers. He showed no signs of impairment.

18th Avenue South was closed for several hours during the investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation.
