Pinellas Park Man Accidentally Shoots and Kills Himself After Threatening Family Dog

November 25, 2014

A Pinellas Park man accidentally shoots and kills himself after threatening to kill family dog.

At 6:13am on November 25, 2014, officers and rescue personnel from Pinellas Park agencies responded to 5271 87th Avenue N. in reference to reports that an adult male had shot himself.

When the officers arrived they found several family members inside and outside of the home. An adult male was found inside the residents with trauma to his face consistent with that of a gunshot wound. Once the scene was determined to be safe, rescue personnel entered the residence and attempted to render aid the victim. Rescue personnel pronounced the man dead on the scene.

Based on the preliminary investigation by the Pinellas Park Police Department, the following has been discerned;

57 year-old Dennis Eugene Emery was involved in a verbal argument with his wife inside the home. During the argument, Emery retrieved a firearm from somewhere in the home and threatened to shoot one of the family dogs. Emery pulled the hammer back on the revolver he was holding as if he was going to follow through with his threat. At some point Emery started to release the hammer back to a safe position. He pointed the gun at his face while he was lowering the hammer and the firearm discharged, striking him in the face. Emery died as a result on this.

According to Pinellas County records, Mr. Emery was arrested 3 times in October 2014.  One of these arrests was for domestic battery and other for aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

This investigation is ongoing.
