St. Petersburg — The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office has declined to prosecute a City of St. Petersburg sanitation worker who was previously charged in connection with the death of a woman struck by a garbage truck in a downtown alley.

According to court records filed June 5, prosecutors entered a “No Information” notice in the case against 51-year-old Nathan D. Brown, indicating that the evidence developed during the investigation does not support criminal prosecution at this time.

“The facts and circumstances shown by the investigation do not warrant prosecution at this time,” the filing states.

Brown had been arrested by St. Petersburg Police following a fatal incident that occurred around 6:30 a.m. on May 30, 2026, in the alley east of 3rd Street North between Central Avenue and 1st Avenue North.

Investigators identified the victim as 49-year-old Candice Roberts, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police alleged Brown, a City of St. Petersburg employee, was operating a 2019 Kenworth garbage truck while retrieving a dumpster from the alley when the crash occurred. An arrest affidavit stated a delivery driver warned Brown that several people were sleeping in the alley before he began backing the truck.

According to investigators, Brown reversed the truck down the alley, striking Roberts while she was sleeping on the ground. The affidavit further alleged that Brown continued operating the truck before leaving the scene without providing information or rendering aid.

Two individuals who were sleeping in the alley told investigators Roberts was alive before the crash, according to the affidavit. Detectives also alleged Brown had seen people sleeping in the alley prior to the incident.

Brown was subsequently arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

However, after reviewing the case, the State Attorney’s Office determined that criminal charges would not move forward. The filing does not prevent prosecutors from revisiting the case should additional evidence emerge in the future, but no criminal prosecution is pending at this time.

The case drew significant public attention following the release of the arrest affidavit and the circumstances surrounding Roberts’ death.

No further information has been released regarding the State Attorney’s decision.
