Son Who Killed Mother in Safety Harbor Ultimately Shot by Three Pinellas Deputies

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation which ended with a deputy involved shooting in Safety Harbor.

The deputy involved shooting occurred near a residence located at 2360 Flanders Way in Safety Harbor.

Deputies were called to the scene at about 2:27 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2019, for a welfare check on 65 year-old Susan Clark.

Deputies located Clark shot to death at the scene.

During the course of the investigation, deputies were engaged in a deputy involved shooting with the suspect. The suspect was identified as the victim’s son, 35 year-old John Clark.

The deputy involved shooting occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m. very close to the original dispatched location. It is reported that Clark pointed a shotgun at officers while driving by the scene in his deceased mother’s vehicle. Three deputies shot at Clark.

A neighbor later told deputies about hearing a gunshot about 1:30 a.m. The call for the welfare check originated from a person in Illinois. That person reportedly was contacted by the son shortly after his mother was shot.

John Clark was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa where he died. No deputies were injured.
