Tampa Teen Dead Following Firework Related Injury

Joseph M. King, age 16 of Tampa, died from a firework related injury that occurred at approximately 10:54 p.m. on Thursday, July 5.

Tampa Police responded to the 4200 block of E. Osborne Ave for the report of a 16 year-old male seriously injured by fireworks.

Upon arrival, officers found good Samaritans assisting Joseph King, who was suffering from trauma to his hand and upper left torso.

As officers began first aid, witnesses stated King had been holding a tube containing a mortar shell style firework in his left hand.

The mortar detonated while he was holding it causing significant injury to his left hand and the left side of his chest.

Tampa Fire Rescue arrived, tended to the King and transported him to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel at TGH, King succumbed to his injuries.

This remains an active investigation.
