Two Seriously Injured After Driver Slams Into Concrete Median Wall on the Courtney Campbell Over a Recent Breakup

Tampa Police responded to a multi-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell Causeway at the Pinellas County line at approximately 2 a.m.

The investigation revealed that a driver despondent over a recent breakup intentionally veered his vehicle into the concrete median wall.  Five other vehicles then collided with his vehicle in a chain reaction crash.

Two occupants of the other vehicles were injured and transported to area hospitals with serious but non-life threatening injuries. A two-month old dog riding as a passenger in one of the vehicles died in the crash.

This crash was not the result of any racing activity.

The despondent driver was taken into involuntary protective custody (Baker Act) and transported to the hospital for a mental health examination. TPD is not releasing the name of the subject taken into protective custody at this time.

The west-bound lanes of Courtney Campbell Causeway were closed to traffic for approximately two hours but are now open.
