Hasan Childs faces 3 counts of Aggravated Assault and 1 count of Misdemeanor Marijuana Possession. Childs was taken into custody at a local hospital, where he is still being treated for his injuries. He is currently listed in stable condition.

On March 25, 2017 at approximately 11:15 p.m., Jovanni Jimenez was driving home eastbound on Skipper Road. His wife, Jennifer Jimenez, was in the front passenger seat and his 3-year-old son was in the rear driver’s side seat. As Jimenez was driving, he noticed a Chevy Malibu behind him that was tailgating him and attempting to pass him. Jimenez pulled over into the Eagle’s Point apartment complex to let the vehicle pass.

The driver of the Chevy Malibu and sole occupant, Hasan Childs, pulled to the passenger side of Jimenez’s stopped vehicle.

Jennifer Jimenez witnessed Childs pointing a silver firearm toward their vehicle. Jovanni Jimenez did not see the firearm at that time.

Jovanni continued to drive toward his apartment when Jennifer told him about the other driver pointing a firearm at them.

Jovanni, who has a valid concealed weapons permit, removed his gun from his waistband and placed it on the seat next to his leg.

When Childs continued to tailgate Jimenez’s vehicle, he again pulled to the side of the road and stopped his car. Childs pulled to the driver’s side of Jimenez’s vehicle and pointed a silver handgun toward Jovanni Jimenez. In fear of his life and his family’s life, Jovanni Jimenez fired three rounds at Childs.

Childs was shot in the upper right arm, torso and beneath his arm.
Jimenez then drove home and immediately phoned 9-1-1.

Childs has an active concealed weapons permit. A loaded firearm was recovered from his vehicle along with less than 20 grams of cannabis.

He suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Tampa Police Department is currently investigating an incident that left a USF football player shot three times late Saturday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:16 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Eagles Point Apartments.  The apartment complex is located at 14551 N 46th Street.

Tampa Police received a call of shots fired at the apartment complex. Upon arriving, police discovered what appeared to be a road rage incident that resulted in one man being shot three times.

26 year-old Jovanni Jimenez told police that 22 year-old Hasan Childs had pointed a gun at him and his wife.

Jimenez told police that he shot Child’s in self defense. Childs was taken to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

The University of South Florida released a statement on Sunday acknowledging
that Childs is a member of the USF football team.

Charlie Strong, USF head football coach issued this statement earlier today.

“We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting.  Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured.  There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information.  Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”

According to Steve Hegerty, Public Information Office at Tampa Police Departement, no charges have been filed against either party at this time and it is unclear what started the confrontation. The case remains under investigation.
