Units from the St. Petersburg Beach Fire Department, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Sunstar were dispatched to a traffic crash Saturday evening about 9:40pm. The crash was reported to be at/near the west toll plaza on the Pinellas Bayway.
According to investigators, a 2004 Chevy Tahoe driven by 56 year-old Charles Mason of St. Petersburg was travelling westbound over the Pinellas Bayway. Deputies say as he entered a right curve heading toward the toll area, he crossed the center line striking a 1992 Ford F250 driven by 66 year-old Clovis Polston of Seminole – who was headed eastbound on the Bayway – head on. A third vehicle, a 2008 Honda driven by 45 year-old Carroll Elmore of St. Petersburg was also headed eastbound on the Bayway. As he tried to stop, the rear of the Ford truck struck the front of his vehicle.
The driver of the Tahoe, Charles Mason and the driver of the Ford F250 Truck, Clovis Polston died at the scene. The passenger in the Tahoe, 6 year-old Clifford Mason, was uninjured. Carroll Elmore (driver) and Jenny McCollum (passenger) of the Honda were uninjured.
According to deputies the child passenger in the Tahoe did not suffer any injuries but was transported to All Children’s Hospital for precautionary reasons.
The Pinellas Bayway was closed in both directions during the lengthy investigative process.
The investigation continues.
