Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) are currently on-scene of a fatality crash involving an 11 year-old child riding his bicycle.
The crash occurred at US-19 and Grand Cypress Boulevard at approximately 5:33 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2022 along the northbound lanes of US-19 near Grand Cypress Boulevard.
According to a preliminary report by FHP, a 21 year-old male was operating a Dodge pickup truck towing a boat trailer in the northbound lanes of US-19 in the outside lane approaching Grand Cypress Boulevard.
In an attempt to respond to slowing traffic, the driver took evasive action and traveled into the east shoulder to avoid a collision. Once on the shoulder, an 11 year-old child traveling northbound on the sidewalk adjacent to the roadway, was struck by the vehicle.
The critically injured child was transported to a local hospital. The child later died at the hospital from injuries suffered in the crash. Initial reports indicate that the child’s parents were with him at the time and attempted resuscitation efforts prior to paramedics arrival on-scene.
Motorists should expect the northbound outside and center lanes to remain closed for the next several hours.
Additional information will be posted when made available from FHP.
