A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in downtown St. Petersburg during the early morning hours of May 25.
According to St. Petersburg Police, officers responded shortly before 3 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of 1st Avenue North near Beach Drive Northeast. When officers arrived, they located a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The victim was identified as 29-year-old Peter-Austin Afentakis.
Investigators determined that Afentakis and 25-year-old Jacob Carreras became involved in a verbal altercation while outside in the 100 block of 1st Avenue North. During the confrontation, police say Carreras shot Afentakis.
Following the investigation, detectives obtained a warrant charging Carreras with second-degree murder.
The U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested Carreras in Hillsborough County. He is expected to be extradited to Pinellas County to face the charge.
Police said the investigation remains active, and additional details have not been released.
